Yes you need an amplifier / receiver. They do not work with audio input.

Cable support:
Front speaker only - when using the included subwoofer
Use good speaker cables Connect the speaker outputs of your pre-installed stereo amplifier (portable theater compatible) to the subwoofer IN, then connect the subwoofer out cables to each of the front speakers.
Center and Rear Speaker - Connect the speaker cable directly to the center speaker with your amplifier (compatible with mobile cinema). Do the same for REAR speakers directly connected to your amplifier.
